DESCRIPTION: 

                                     This course is designed to familiarize students with basic computing concepts emphasizing personal computers and focusing on the use of computers in business.  Introductory experience with basic computer applications will be accomplished using Microsoft Windows/95 and Microsoft Office 97. 

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

1.         Understanding the user interface and describe computer components necessary for human/computer communications.

2.         Describe basic file access methods and microcomputer storage media.

3.         Describe how computers represent data and identify data representation methods for communication.

4.         Apply the use of Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Office Professional 97 to accomplish basic word processing, spreadsheet, database, Presentation applications, and learning about building Web Page.

 

MATERIALS REQUIRED

 

A minimum of two 3 1/2" high-density diskettes will be required for class.

A folder to keep your assignments.  Your name and class time should be on each page of homework, typed by computer.

 

 

CLASS TIME APPROACH

 

It is assumed that the student has read all assigned materials prior to classroom discussion.  Assigned reading materials will be summarized in lectures. Efforts will be made to further demonstrate and enhance the assigned topic materials.

The course uses an active learning approach to provide students the opportunity to test their understanding of classroom concepts as well as an applications software intensive orientation to the use of Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Office Professional 97.

 

CLASS POLICIES

 

1.         You are expected to attend each class meeting.  No make-up exams, quizzes, or labs with unexcused absences.  Departmental regulations will be adhered to concerning excessive absenteeism.  Five hours of unexcused absenteeism will change your final grade to F.

2.         Assignments are to be submitted on the due date and due time.  Late assignments will not be accepted without an acceptable excuse.


EVALUATION

 

1.         Lab assignments may be prepared during class time or required as outside activities.  Lab assignments will not be accepted after the due date/time.

2.         Grades will be based on the following system:

           3 Exams..                      70%                             90 to 100            A

           Assignments: Labs..       20 %                            80 to 89              B

          Chapter Assignments

          & Attendance                  10%                              70 to 79              C

                                                ====                            60 to 69              D

        Total.......................          100%                            59 and below       F
